Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem Offers a Luxury Sukkah with a Hanging Roof During the Jewish Holiday of Sukkot

Jerusalem - The Jewish holiday of Sukkot is one of the most popular times for visitors in Jerusalem. During the seven-day harvest festival, the people build a Sukkah, a walled structure covered with organic material, and treat it like their home away from home. The structure evokes the temporary dwellings the Israelites inhabited on their way from Egypt to Canaan, the Promised Land. To commemorate Sukkot, Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem will open its own Sukkah from October 13, 2019 through October 20, 2019.
Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem’s Sukkah is considered one of the largest, longest and most luxurious in Israel, accommodating 250 guests at a time. “We take pride in our Sukkah, as it is both indoor and outdoor thanks to a retractable glass rooftop that sits several stories above the hotel’s lobby atrium and can be opened and closed in a matter of seconds — ensuring that a rain-soaked Sukkot meal becomes impossible,” said General Manager Avner On.
The design, coordinated together with religious authorities, allows the lobby to become a Sukkah in every sense of the term and ensure guests can enjoy the hotel’s fine dining in a climate-controlled setting.
The roof covering consists of materials that originated from the earth. Palm leaves, bamboo sticks, pine branches, and wood are used in every Sukkah; however, at the Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem the covering hangs from the roof with special strings. “Visitors are impressed with the outstanding design as it looks like the roof is floating in the thin air. This extraordinary facility is well known among frequent guests and is a key site for visitors to see during their holiday,” says Avner On.
