Traditional Afternoon Tea at Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem
JERUSALEM - Today, Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem launched Afternoon Tea in the "King's Court" restaurant. A traditional British version and one with a Middle eastern twist under the direction of Pastry Chef Claude Ben Simon.
"The British Afternoon tea is made of small cucumber and cheese sandwiches, smoked salmon and classic egg salad alongside scones, sweet pastries and cakes. It is designed to stem hunger between lunch and dinner. All served in prestigious porcelain with silver butter knife, dessert forks and teaspoons", explains Ben-Simon. Duchess Anna of Bedford introduced this ritual in 1840 when she became hungry in the afternoon, in wait of a fashionably late dinner. According to the Pastry Chef, under Queen Victoria's reign in Great Britain afternoon tea became a formal event and ceremony of great cultural significance. Scones served at a traditional tea are sweet rolls originating in 16th century Scotland. At the time they were baked using oats, while recent versions use wheat flour and these have gained great popularity and become an inseparable part of the tea ceremony. In best British tradition they are served with jam and butter or rich English cream.
Additionally, the Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem also offers a Middle Eastern Afternoon Tea. This includes mille-feuille with tahini cream, sweet pitta bread with halva, a variety of Baklava pastries, spiced cardamom cake and espresso mousse with caramel and cinnamon. Served alongside these sweet delights are dried fruit and mini-sandwiches of pitta bread and grilled red tuna, tortillas with tahini cream, roasted eggplant and egg.
Apart of the delectable food options, guests may choose from a dozen Ronnefeldt teas, including Darjeeling, Assam Bari, Peach, Bora Bora and more. Fresh mint tea is recommended with the Middle Eastern option.
