The Roosevelt New Orleans, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel Relives History with ‘Stormin’ of the Sazerac’ on Sept. 22
NEW ORLEANS - The Roosevelt New Orleans, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel will raise a glass to the New Orleans women of 1949 during its annual re-creation of the “Stormin’ of the Sazerac” on Friday, Sept. 22 starting at 1 p.m. The event honors the bold group of ladies who stormed the Sazerac Bar in 1949 demanding equality, and a stiff drink, at a time when women were only allowed to be served at the bar on Mardi Gras day. The hotel invites all women to join in the one-of-a-kind celebration encompassing libations, cuisine and entertainment in the lap of luxury. Festivities will take place in the Roosevelt’s famous Blue Room, the elegant Fountain Lounge and, most notably, the world-renowned Sazerac Bar.
The event kicks off in the Blue Room, where guests will enjoy a three-course, ladies-only meal featuring cuisine of Executive Chef Jose Martinez along with live entertainment by Chance Bushman and The Ibervillianaires. The menu includes a stormin’ green salad, decadent grilled bistro steak and blackened drum and will be topped off with a spirited, Sazerac inspired lemon sponge cake with gin mousse.
All attendees are invited to dress in their best 1940s and 1950s post-war New Orleans style, such as hats, veils, peep-toe shoes and gloves. The event will feature a fashion show showcasing vintage 1940's style from Miss Claudia’s Vintage Clothing & Costumes and a best dressed competition. The winner will receive a one-night stay at The Roosevelt New Orleans and spa treatment at The Waldorf Astoria Spa.
Also at the event, The Roosevelt New Orleans will present its second annual “Reigning Spirit of the Sazerac,” an award honoring one deserving woman in the New Orleans community. The “Reigning Spirit of the Sazerac” is a woman who challenges the status quo and works to influence positive change in her community. She is an exemplary woman whose bravery and determination reflect what we celebrate about those great New Orleans ladies who stormed the Sazerac Bar decades ago.
Leading the day will be New Orleans’ cocktail historian and founder of Drink and Learn Elizabeth Pearce alongside Charles Divins, a local favorite and well-known morning news anchor for WDSU-TV.
Adding to the spirit of the event, the Fountain Lounge will open its doors promptly at 1 p.m. and will give the first 25 women in costume an exclusive Stormin’ gift bag. To honor the occasion, the Fountain Lounge will be serving half-priced selected cocktails from 1 – 3 p.m. and small plates from 1 - 4 p.m., inviting ladies to toast while dancing to the live music of Tom Hook and Wendell Brunious Quartet. The small plate options will include crispy Brussel sprouts, pimento cheese arancini, spicy peel and eat edamame, crawfish and crab beignets, twice cooked wings and gulf coast au gratin.
Guests from the Fountain Lounge and Blue Room will unite at 3 p.m. to “storm” the Sazerac Bar with this year’s “Reigning Spirit of the Sazerac” at the forefront of the second line.
The re-creation marks the occasion when women, normally admitted to the renowned Sazerac Bar only on Mardi Gras, stormed the popular gathering place insisting on access equal to that of men; in other words, at any time. Fashion at the 1949 event may have been pure period, but expectations of the “Stormers” were very modern. What they demanded was the revered Sazerac cocktail, Ramos Gin Fizz and other cocktails that only men sipped at the Sazerac Bar– and they succeeded.
Blue Room luncheon tickets are $49 each, excluding tax and gratuity. Reservations can be made visiting here or calling 504-335-3129.
