Taste of Waldorf Astoria Travels West for Third Annual Culinary Competition
Renowned Chefs Face Off at the Soon-to-Open Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills
MCLEAN, Va - Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts, Hilton's (NYSE: HLT) iconic luxury brand, today announces the relocation of the third annual Taste of Waldorf Astoria culinary competition event, presented by Visa to the highly-anticipated Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills, opening in June 2017. As part of the global culinary program in partnership with the James Beard Foundation (JBF), five Waldorf Astoria Executive Chefs and five JBF Rising Star Chef Semi-Finalists will compete on July 12 to be named the winner of this year's Taste of Waldorf Astoria.
Now in its third year, the program challenges five chef pairings to collaborate on the next iconic Waldorf Astoria dish and culminates with a competition that showcases their culinary creativity.
This year's Taste of Waldorf Astoria poses a specific challenge - to transform happy hour into the "Fifth Hour: Bar + Bites," a contemporary update to the time-honored ritual using innovative themes that mirror the sophisticated and modern style of each property. With the goal of expanding bar offerings beyond traditional drinks and appetizers, each chef pair was asked to create two small bites that pair perfectly with an original cocktail and mocktail. The journey from plate to palate and chefs' ability to create a truly unforgettable food and beverage pairing will be a key component of the judging criteria.
A star-studded panel of judges who will determine Waldorf Astoria's next iconic dish includes: acclaimed chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, who is opening his first west coast restaurant at the hotel, Adam Rapoport, editor-in-chief of Bon Appétit magazine, and Erik Bruner-Yang, owner and chef of Maketto in D.C. who also won last year's Taste of Waldorf Astoria competition. Following the event, the final Taste of Waldorf Astoria pairing will launch alongside new "Fifth Hour" programming at each of the brand's 26 hotels and resorts worldwide, introducing an unexpected new happy hour experience to today's luxury travelers.
"After two successful years of hosting Taste of Waldorf Astoria in New York, we are excited to welcome our talented teams to the new Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills, giving them the first taste of true star treatment," says John T. A. Vanderslice, global head, Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts. "We look forward to celebrating the chefs' accomplishments and naming the next iconic Waldorf Astoria dish during such an unforgettable moment for the brand."
