Witness The Color And Passion Of Easter Week In Quito, Ecuador
Hilton Colón Quito the Ideal Place to Experience and Enjoy Easter Celebrations
QUITO, ECUADOR - Hilton Colón Quito, as part of Hilton Hotels & Resorts portfolio of more than 570 properties worldwide, today announced that Easter celebrations in Quito have begun, with the hotel at the heart of the cultural and religious events.
Ideally located in the north of the Ecuadorian capital, Quito, adjacent to an attractive urban park, the Hilton Colón Quito makes the perfect base to be part of the unique events taking place throughout Easter Week, as well as its cuisine.
"Easter Week is a special time here in Quito," said Patricio Jiménez, general manager, Hilton Colón Quito. "The people's religious faith and fervor can be felt everywhere, particularly in the historic center, where dozens of events and processions take place."
With thousands of penitents processing, hundreds of masses, dozens of churches decorated and a special soup that's only prepared at this time of year, Ecuador's capital ranks among the world's most compelling places to witness all the faith and fervor of Semana Santa (Easter Week).
The commemorations begin on Palm Sunday, with a procession through the historic centre, as rivers of people carrying palms and branches make their way through the World Heritage-listed historic center. In parallel, a Sacred Music Festival takes place, with concerts held within ornate churches and historic venues across the city.
Quito's Old Town is a treasure trove at any time of year. But, even more so during Easter Week. On Good Friday, the largest procession of all takes place at Jesús del Gran Poder (Jesus the Almighty). At midday, more than two thousand penitents make their way out of the impressive wooden doors of San Francisco Church, on a circuit around the Old Town that ends in the same plaza in the afternoon, when a mass is held in the open air.
The men dress in purple hooded robes, while women wear purple robes and veils. Many participants also decide to carry crosses, or to walk the circuit with chains - all part of their penance. Tens of thousands of people come to watch and be part of the whole event.
This overflowing of faith during the most important week in the Catholic calendar can all be enjoyed from the Hilton Colón Quito.
