Students play Jazz! At BEEFY’S by Sir Ian Botham
Music students from the University of Southampton have the opportunity to perform live as part of a working partnership with BEEFY’S by Sir Ian Botham at Hilton at The Ageas Bowl, Southampton
SOUTHAMPTON, U.K. - Students and recent graduates are now entertaining diners on Sundays at BEEFY’S by Sir Ian Botham as part of a partnership with the Music Department of the University of Southampton and the restaurant located at Hilton at The Ageas Bowl, Southampton. The opportunity to play music in a leading dining establishment is giving students the chance to learn ‘real-world’ skills about performing in a professional setting.
Students are actively encouraged to consider elements, such as the audience and choosing the appropriate music to play, the acoustics and dynamics of the room and being able to respond to requests from the restaurant team. Through a live performance, students get to hone their skills and develop a real understanding of the craft and how to deliver to the public.
Luke Montgomery, first year music student at the University of Southampton said, “Performing at BEEFY’S has given me a chance to play regularly and be able to showcase my jazz, playing as a professional performer.”
Dan Mar-Molinero, head of jazz and pop performance, University of Southampton, said, “Having a partnership with BEEFY’S has allowed us to help develop and showcase early career musicians from the Music Department. For us, this is a chance to place our exceptional performers into an exceptional work environment and allow them to get ‘real-world’, on-the-job, performing experience.”
Gabor Tresco, restaurant manager of BEEFY’S said, “We are really excited to be able to work with the Music Department of the University of Southampton for our Sunday Lunch service. The partnership allows us to work with the local community and enable our team to support the students.”
Live Jazz is now being performed during lunch at BEEFY’S restaurant every Sunday. Guests can expect to hear classic standards from the golden era of Jazz, including ‘Fly me to the Moon’, ‘Take Five’ and ‘My Funny Valentine.’
