Beehives Create A Buzz At Hilton Stockholm Slussen
Hilton Stockholm Slussen Supports Bee Populations with Beehives on its Rooftop
STOCKHOLM - To support threatened bee populations in Sweden, Hilton Stockholm Slussen placed beehives on its rooftop already in the spring of 2011. The hotel is one of 13 other Hilton properties in Europe that have since then installed beehives as part of their commitment to preserving the environment.
In recent years, bee populations have decreased rapidly due to climate change, the use of pesticides and a lack of food sources for bees. Bees pollinate plants and agricultural crops, ensuring a successful harvest - and so their decline poses a major threat to the world's food supply.
To create an environment where bees can thrive, Hilton Stockholm Slussen has since 2011 had two beehives installed, with approximately 60,000 bees, on the hotel roof top. Plants in the surrounding area get pollinated while providing a source of food for the bees.
The hotel also uses the home-grown honey in the restaurant and bar as well as for the meeting coffee breaks, in this way letting guests take part this very locally produced honey. This echoes Hilton's mission to create heartfelt experiences for guests and a positive impact on communities.
"Installing beehives at our hotel has helped us make an impact on the ecosystem in a simple, effective way", said Jan Thomsen, "Bees are essential to our survival. We hope more individuals and companies will be inspired to install beehives, so that together we can all contribute to supporting this threatened species."
This initiative is part of Hilton's commitment to preserving the environment, one of the three pillars of its global corporate responsibility strategy, Travel with Purpose.
