Polish People Are Finally Discovering Their Cities

With Staycations on The Rise, Hampton by Hilton Looks at Polish Travel Trends for 2017

WARSAW - With the trend for staycations continuing to rise, research1 out today by Hampton by Hilton has revealed the travel habits of Poles. Hilton's (NYSE: HLT) global brand of nearly 2,200 mid-priced hotels, found that 73 per cent of people planning a short trip in 2017, will do so within Poland. According to The Ministry of Sport and Tourism Report 20152, the percentage of Polish residents that enjoyed short domestic trips in 2015 reached 35 per cent, growing from just 23 per cent in 2011.

The research also revealed a new breed of Polish "Seekenders" - those value-conscious travellers who seize the weekend to seek out new travel experiences - with more than 30 per cent of respondents preferring frequent, short getaways (up to three nights) to fewer, longer trips.  What's more, 73 per cent of respondents choose to take their short breaks within Poland.

It is no surprise that Poland is being recognised as a great place to visit. With its rich cultural and historical heritage it is an endless source of travel inspiration. The research showed that people value sightseeing opportunities and local attractions, with 77 per cent of respondents admitting that they plan to choose the destination for their next trip based on these factors.

Big Polish cities prove to be the most popular when planning a staycation, with 72 per cent of those surveyed agreeing the array of attractions means visitors rarely get bored. Hampton by Hilton discovered the three most sought after places to visit on the weekend are:

  1. Gdansk (63 per cent). More than 60 per cent of respondents cite the great culinary scene, with unusual and off-the-wall bars and restaurants and independent cultural spots, as the reason for a visit
  2. Krakow (62 per cent)
  3. Wrocław (56 per cent)

According to those surveyed, the three most important factors when booking a staycation are:

  • Value for money (72 per cent)
  • The proximity and easy access to the places they want to visit (48 per cent)
  • If they can relax and have a lazy breakfast at the hotel (36 per cent).

The research showed that in addition to value, travellers rate their comfort as an important part of their experience, with 73 per cent of respondents preferring to stay in a hotel rather than with friends or family. The survey revealed that the Polish are loyal customers and, when satisfied, 69 per cent of respondents admitted that they would choose the same hotel when returning to a destination. Hospitality brands are becoming more aware of this loyalty and are responding to rising market demand. According to the Ministry of Sport and Tourism Report 2015, the number of three-star hotels in Poland grew by 21 per cent between 2012 and 2015.[1]
