Local dignitaries, event organisers and local businesses attend the official grand opening of the DoubleTree by Hilton Hull
Over 500 local dignitaries, event organisers and representatives from local businesses attended a gala dinner on Friday night to celebrate the grand opening of the DoubleTree by Hilton Hull, the largest conference venue in Hull and East Yorkshire.
The event was hosted by television presenter Gethin Jones, and guests included the Deputy Lord Mayor of Hull and his consort, the Deputy Chief Executive of Hull Council, and the Head of Visitor Destinations for Hull. Also in attendance were event organisers from Siemens and BP and representatives from the Meetings and Events Team, CHS Group and Good Travel Management.
The opening of this new venue has created a vibrant new destination for corporate and association event planners; the DoubleTree by Hilton Hull has 900m2 of ground floor, pillar free, flexible event space that can hold up to 1000 delegates theatre style. The venue is already getting industry recognition and recently won ‘Best Large Conference and Exhibition Space’ at this year’s CHS Awards.
Guests were greeted by the ‘paparazzi’ on arrival via the red carpeted dedicated events entrance. An electric cellist played as drinks were served in the reception area, and then ballerinas dressed in LED lights led guests through to the main event space for dinner. Once seated, guests were enthralled by aerial dancers and enjoyed a three course dinner.
The dinner menu commenced with a starter of goats cheese, walnut, pear and garden pea salad, with beetroot dressing, which was followed by a main course of breast of corn fed chicken, confit smoked leg and dauphinoise potatoes. Dessert was a white chocolate mousse, with flavours of raspberry. Dinner was accompanied by wine from the Viticulture collection - a range of hand-selected wines by Hull wine merchant House of Townend that was launched in celebration of the City of Culture status. £1 from each bottle of wine is donated to support local arts and cultural projects.
Following dinner, guests were entertained by stars of Strictly Come Dancing Ian Waite and Oti Mabuse. Then an interactive Q&A was held to discuss the hotel, its facilities and the opportunities it has created. This was followed by a short video about Hull as the City of Culture 2017 and a pre-recorded speech from Nick Smart, Hilton’s Development Officer from Washington.
The gala dinner ended with local band the Tzars, who tour nationally but loved playing to such a large audience in their home town. Then the after show party continued upstairs in the Lexington Rooftop Bar and Terrace with a DJ and organic jam session.

The charity auction raised over £5,000 for the Hull and East Yorkshire (HEY) Smile Foundation - the venue’s partner charity that provides support, guidance and resources for over 300 charities in the region with a focus on helping the homeless.
