Hilton Worldwide Awards Travel with Purpose Action Grant to DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Alice Springs
$5,000 Grant to Support Greenhouse Project
ALICE SPRINGS, Northern Territory - Hilton Worldwide (NYSE: HLT) has awarded DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Alice Springs a $5,000 Travel with Purpose Action Grant. The funds will be used to build a greenhouse for growing micro herbs and vegetables complemented by a new compost area to turn green waste to soil, further reducing the hotel's overall impact on the environment.
The Travel with Purpose Action Grant program, now in its third year, is part of the company's global efforts to recognize and encourage collaboration to address local and global challenges. DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Alice Springs is one of 100 winners around the world to receive a 2015 Travel with Purpose Action Grant.
This grant provides funds to DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Alice Springs for an on-site project, or one with a local organization that provides unique engagement opportunities for local teams and creative approaches to address social and environmental challenges. These projects align with the company's four focus areas: creating opportunities for individuals to reach their full potential; strengthening local communities; celebrating cultures and the positive impact of travel; and living sustainably through the measurement, analysis and improvement of the use of natural resources.
According to Todd Grierson, General Manager, "We are thrilled to be awarded this grant to implement a project that benefits the environment and drives business objectives. Our teams continually work together to find creative ways to reduce our impact on the environment, and this grant will enable us to do just that. We also hope to engage the wider community on our sustainable efforts and show local school groups what can still be achieved in our arid and isolated region."
After receiving the award for Best Environmental Practice by Australian Hotels Association - NT, DoubleTree by Hilton Alice Springs have been seeking new ways to challenge the way they do things and further cement their reputation in the community as leaders in sustainability. Whilst the hotel helps to reduce its carbon footprint with 1254 roof-top solar panels and energy efficient lighting, the opportunity to grow fresh ingredients for the kitchen and recycle vegetative kitchen scraps will no longer be wasted. This is particularly important in Alice Springs as its isolation and extreme temperatures make fresh produce difficult and expensive to source.
The greenhouse and compost area will be a unique point of difference for the hotel and one which the team at DoubleTree by Hilton Alice Springs hopes to share with the wider community. There is a valuable opportunity to work with local school groups and share what the hotel team members have learnt about sustainability and hopefully encourage kids to care about minimizing their impact on the environment.
