Conrad Macao Celebrates Earth Hour 2019 by Turning Off External Façade Lights
Multi-faceted approach helps property cut environmental footprint as part of Hilton’s 2030 goals
MACAO, China - Conrad Macao, Cotai Central celebrated Earth Hour 2019 from 8:30–9:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, March 30. The hotel is taking action to halve its environmental footprint, incorporating water stewardship, energy conservation, waste reduction and community projects, and Earth Hour is just one of many initiatives undertaken by the hotel.
“We have launched various green initiatives since reopening in April 2012, and in 2013 took the initiative to make Earth Hour a biweekly exercise, not just an annual event. We posed a friendly challenge for other hotels in Macao to join our monthly lights-out as part of Earth Hour's global ‘I Will If You Will’ campaign. Our green resolution to observe ‘Earth Hour, Every Month’ sees Conrad Macao switch off all non-essential lighting on the first and third Tuesday of each month.”
In support of action on global climate change the hotel turned off its external façade lights and dimmed all non-essential lighting in its restaurants and lounges, including its crystal chandelier lobby centerpiece. In its place was a spectacular display made up of 216 tea light candles with recycled materials that formed the shape of a lightbulb, illuminating the lobby and spelling out “Earth Hour 2019!” to demonstrate the hotel’s commitment to Earth Hour, Every Month.
In addition, Conrad Macao actively practices green initiatives on a daily basis, resulting in a reduction of 497,059 kWh energy in 2018 vs. 2017. This is equivalent to a 3 percent reduction and can supply 1,242 Macao households for one month. Other energy initiatives include reduced plastic consumption by switching from small bottles of water to larger ones and discontinuing the use of plastic straws at owned restaurants and outlets.
