Design for Plant-Based Life: British Designers Devise the World’s First Vegan Hotel Suite

Multi-sensory design experts Bompas & Parr designed the plant-based interior of London's first luxury vegan hotel suite in partnership with Hilton London Bankside. Using the latest vegan-friendly innovations, including a headboard hewn from pineapple leaves and a bamboo floor, the London-based designer duo chose each element to create a boutique, sustainable experience for guests. It has even received a seal of approval from the Vegan Society!
"Veganism is not just a dining trend, it has become a lifestyle choice for many and in turn, we wanted to be able to offer those who follow the plant-based lifestyle the chance to fully immerse themselves within it from the moment they walk into the hotel," explains James B. Clarke, General Manager, Hilton London Bankside.
Tasked with bringing this vision to life, Bompas & Parr used multiple natural materials to create the ultimate hotel room, inspired by Southwark’s deep link to the history of plants.
“The central motif of the vegan suite is the pineapple, given the proximity of Hilton London Bankside to the first site in the UK where pineapples were grown and the fruit’s history as a symbol of welcome,” says Sam Bompas, co-founder at Bompas & Parr. “A core part of the design is Piñatex, a plant-based leather alternative, covering the headboard, seating and cushions also mirrored in the use of the pineapple as a motif.”
Natural and sustainable materials continue with eco-friendly bamboo linen gracing beds – there’s even a vegan pillow menu with buckwheat and millet-filled options – while soysilk (made from soybean residue) drapes dress windows. Other amenities incorporated by teams at the hotel include Prija vegan toiletries, in recycled containers, of course, as well as a vegan mini bar selection and in-room dining menu. Peckish guests can also peruse the specially designed vegan menu at the botanically-inspired OXBO restaurant downstairs.
“Guest experience was paramount to our considerations throughout,” says Sam. “While there has been a drive to increasingly design for Instagram and visual aesthetic, the suite has been created with deeper resonance, ongoing meaning and purpose for the future. Creating a suite with a strong ethos has been crucial.”
