Celebrate National Piña Colada Day All Summer with The Recipe from Caribe Hilton, the Birthplace of the Delectable Drink
Picture this: The sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, your toes are buried in the warm sand and you’re sipping on something sweet –a refreshing, deliciously chilled piña colada.
National Piña Colada Day is July 10 and though not all of us can spend every day in a tropical paradise, we should still be able to celebrate accordingly and pretend like we are.
The piña colada is the perfect mix of all things tropical vacation: tangy pineapple juice, rich coconut cream and of course, the staple rum (or not if you prefer a refreshing virgin cocktail.) But how much do you really know about the birthplace of this summer staple that inspired a hit pop song featured in many films over several decades?
Invented at Caribe Hilton in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the piña colada dates back to 1954 when the hotel’s bartender, Ramón “Monchito” Marrero, created a special cocktail blending rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice. After continuing to experiment with the cocktail for over three months, Mr. Marrero finally settled on the icy recipe he felt captured the true flavors of Puerto Rico, naming it Piña Colada. He served the drink for 35 years and in 1978, the Piña Colada was declared the official drink of Puerto Rico.
Whether you prefer to drink it out of a fresh pineapple, a coconut, or a glass with a colorful umbrella, a smooth piña colada is sure to make you feel like you’re on vacation no matter where you are. Caribe Hilton’s Original Piña Colada Recipe:
- 2 oz. white rum
- 1 oz. coconut cream
- 1 oz. heavy cream
- 6 oz. fresh pineapple juice
- 1/2 cup crushed ice
Mix rum, cream of coconut, heavy cream and pineapple juice in a blender. Add ice and mix for 15 seconds. Serve in a 12-oz. glass.
